A crown is a restorative procedure whereby the original tooth is prepared for a dental crown. This is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over the original tooth. This is done to restore its shape and size, strength, and also to improve its appearance. The new dental crown which is cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
Why Do We Crown Teeth?
There are many reasons for crowning teeth but these are the main ones
- To strengthen a badly damaged tooth, that may be cracked, has worn down due to excessive grinding.
- The original contour of the tooth can be restored if it was cracked or worn down.
- It is possible to fill spaces and create a more natural look.
- A tooth damaged through root canal can be crowned for a better appearance.
- Teeth that are stained or discolored may be crowned.
- Crowns can support the end of a dental bridge where there is missing teeth.
Before restoring a damaged tooth with a crown it is important first to build a strong foundation on what is left of the tooth. This foundation can help strengthen the tooth. The foundation or ‘core’ can take the form of a large bonded ‘filling’ retained by adhesive techniques. They are usually only filled with root filled teeth where very little tooth structure remains.
Existing teeth that need crowns are usually damaged and in a poor state of repair. Sometimes there may be damage below the gum line with pre-existing inflammation. It is therefore necessary to perform a root canal before placing the crown.
HOW ARE ALL-CERAMIC CROWNS FITTED AT PERFECT TEETH DENTAL PLLC?
The dentist will clean and reshape the tooth to be treated in order to prepare it for the crown. The tooth is then tapered so that it will allow the crown to fit snugly over the prepared tooth.
The dentist will take an impression of your teeth with dental material. The mould is sent to a dental lab and this is used to fabricate the crown.
In the meantime you will be fitted with a temporary crown.
Once the crown is ready the dentist will ask you to return for a procedure where you will be fitted with your new crown that will be attached to the existing tooth structure. This gets checked by the dentist.
Once you are satisfied it will be attached with dental cement.
